Lower salary limits for various professions

Among the new ones from  November 18, 2023 (-> EU Blue Card and various labor migration standards). In accordance with the current regulations, the German government has adapted the criteria for obtaining an  EU Blue Card to Directive (EU) 2021/1883. Notable changes include lower salary limits for regular and bottleneck occupations.

  1. Minimum salary for bottleneck occupations and new entrants to the labor market The minimum salary for bottleneck occupations and new entrants to the labor market will be 45.3% of the annual pension insurance valuation limit, which is expected to be €39,682.80 in 2023. People who have earned a university degree in the last three years can receive an EU Blue Card in Germany if their salary is at least the minimum salary for their profession.

  2. Minimum salary for other professions For all other professions, the minimum salary will be 50% of the annual pension insurance assessment limit, approximately €43,800 in 2023.

  3. Eligibility for IT specialists without a university degree IT specialists without a university degree but with equivalent professional experience may also be eligible for an EU Blue Card under the updated criteria.

Expansion of bottleneck occupations

The list of bottleneck occupations has been expanded to include the following:

  1. Manager for production, mining, construction or sales
  2. Information and Communications Technology Services Manager
  3. Veterinarians
  4. And more

Mobility and family reunification

Holders of an EU Blue Card issued by another EU member state now have the right to short- and long-term mobility in Germany. After at least 12 months, you can acquire long-term residence in Germany without a visa. At this point, however, a German EU Blue Card must be applied for. The new rules also make family reunification easier for EU Blue Card holders.

Simplified process for professionals

Overall, these changes aim to simplify the immigration process for professionals with practical knowledge and professional training who want to migrate to Germany. In addition, looser criteria are applied for professional drivers from third countries.
